Building consistent modular experiences for the Design System.

Canada Life offers multiple products, each with unique user interfaces and flows. This inconsistency led to fragmented experiences, higher development costs, and accessibility challenges. To address this, we initiated a design system project focused on creating reusable modules that deliver consistency and scalability.

Impact

Efficiency: Saves time, money, and resources, centralizing updates for design and development.

Compliance: WCAG accessibility standards met; legal and compliance approval secured.

Scalability: Future updates propagate automatically across all products using a shared module.

Clarity and simplicity: Each section of the flow is clear, understandable, and uses consistent language.

Familiarity for multi-product users: A unified experience reduces cognitive load and improves trust.

Approach

Audit current experiences: Reviewed existing flows across Insurance and Wealth products.

Requirements gathering: Engaged stakeholders and business leads to align on priorities and constraints, define functional and compliance needs.

Collaborative design: Held conversations with other designers to align on best practices.

Flexible architecture: Built modular solutions adaptable for both Insurance and Wealth requirements.

Modular architecture: Designed flexible components that adapt to different product contexts while maintaining consistency.

Feedback & iteration

  • Usage metrics: Tracked adoption rates and performance across products.

  • Implementation support: Partnered with product engineering teams for seamless integration.

  • Enhancement requests: Captured feedback for continuous improvement and scalability.

Results

  • Delivered a centralized design system with reusable modules.

  • Reduced design and development duplication.

  • Improved time-to-market for new features.

  • Working to achieve full WCAG compliance and legal approval.

Next steps

  • Conduct regular stakeholder reviews to understand product roadmaps and what new modules could improve workflows.

  • Expand the design system to cover additional flows and modules.

  • Continue to monitor usage and feedback for iterative improvements.

Beneficiaries module

The original plan was to deliver a single centralized module across all products. However, legal and compliance variations between insurance and wealth were quite complex.

With this discovery, the team made the decision to duplicate the module and create unique experiences for insurance and wealth. Though not ideal, this solution still provides centralization streamlined to both pillars.
